Cjhristmas Merriment With Family

Oh what fun we had over Christmas with all three of our children and all five of our grandchildren staying with us in our home here in Grand Marais, MN!!  Somehow we were able to find places for everyone to sleep, but it was kinda like a giant slumber party.  There was our oldest daughter Cherish and her husband Patrick, their son Judah 8 and Kaylee 4;  our daughter Joanna and our son Jonathan with his wife Reseth and their son Aaron 14, Titus 12, and Evemarie 8.  Jonathan recently retired from the Air Force and bought a house and land in the country by Ely.  It is so nice to have all our children close by now.

So much fun, activity, lots of delicious food, games and laughter.  We have a ping-pong table downstairs, so our son-in-law, Patrick organized a round robin tournament which included everyone ages 8-75.  I figured either he or our son Jonathan would be the grand champion, but amazingly, this little ole Grandma Daryl made her way to the finish line as the champion.   But our 14 year old grandson, Aaron really gave me a run for the money and I predict that he could be the champion next year.

Altogether we had five snowmobiles including some two seaters, so we piled on the winter clothing and all went on a snowmobile ride for a few hours.  Our home is conveniently located next door to the snowmobile club, so we just travel through the woods a little ways and we can connect to the state trails which go for many  miles.

Also located next door adjacent to the snowmobile club is a steep hill that provides a thrilling downhill ride on sleds.  The children slid for hours and were pulled back up the hill with a snowmobile.

The weather report over the Christmas week said we were to have about a foot of snow from a large storm headed our way.  Everyone was excited about that because it would make it possible for the snowmobile club to actually groom the trails making for a smoother ride and it's just plain fun to watch snow falling at Christmas.  However, to everyone's dismay, the storm went south of us and we got only about an inch of snow the whole week.

Grand Marais has a YMCA with a large swimming pool and gymnasium for the kids to enjoy as well.  That provided many hours of fun and excitement for kids and adults alike.  Patrick said he especially enjoyed sitting in the warm sauna.  I think he and Jonathan are going to see about getting a YMCA in Ely!

Jonathan and Patrick woke up early one morning and took off on their horses (snowmobiles) north up the Gunflint Trail.  They saw some beautiful country and took a picture at Hungry Jack lodge on Hungry Jack Lake.  They were amazed at the scenery.

All in all it was a wonderful time to be able to take time to visit and catch up on everyone's life, play with the precious grandchildren and enjoy each other's company.  We are so thankful to have such wonderful children and grandchildren who genuinely love each other.

We want to wish everyone a blessed New Year!
