Gunflint Mail Run Sled Dog Race

Our daughter Joanna ran her first race of the season in our backyard here in Grand Marais, MN.  Actually, it took us about an hour to get up the Gunflint Trail where the race started at Trail Center.  It is nice to be so close to a race.  After the first leg, she was out in front and at the end she even lengthened her lead on the 2nd place finisher.  The weather was cool, the trails were hard and fast and her team ran like the wind.  Below is her rendition of the race.

Thank you Nace Hagemann for the great photos of all the teams at the 2020 Gunflint Mail Run yesterday!!! My team won the 64 mile race with the amazing Schouweiler team hot on our tail!!!! We like to take turns winning these last few years it seems lol  What a super fun race this is with amazing hospitality at Trail Center Lodge and this year the trail and weather were absolutely perfect! Fastest trail we have ever run at this race and the dogs just flew! It was a blast for both humans and canines, happy tails at the finish!!! So proud of my team and had a blast being along for the fast and thrilling ride! This is most likely (but who knows?  ) the last racing season for my super leader Viva (tan leader) at 8 1/2 yrs. and its off to a really great start! 4 yr. old Nikita co-led and just wanted to go faster and faster! Bayfield, Katniss, Bandit, Warrior, Soldier and yearling Laska at her first race all did super!!! I thank the Lord for His answering all my prayers!! To get in the race! To not snow as was predicted originally and a fast trail and great run! For healing up a dog and no re-injury! For the performance of a dog during the race! Wow! And last but not least a huge thank you to my wonderful and loyal handlers and kennel help/support to both my parents, John and Daryl Oberg!!!!!! And to John Judi Vitek, John thank you so much for your help and expertise during the race and help in other ways! And Judi for all the help you have given me too!! My neck was warm  and the dogs feet were in perfect condition!!! And to Julia Cross for your help getting us to the start line in the morning!!! You were running around like a wild woman helping teams out!!
